Carriage House Gallery Celebrates Opening
The new Carriage House Gallery of Artists will celebrate its grand opening over the Labor Day weekend. A reception for the Gallery grand opening will take place on Saturday, August 31, from 6 to 9 PM. Drink, and a medley of food fare will be provided. An acoustic guitar will be available should anyone want to liven up the celebration. Gallery sculptor Charles Schubert is an occasional musician/songwriter, and will do a few tunes. The public is invited to share the moment, meet the artists, and take a look at the newest art place in town.
The Gallery is owned and operated by seven local-area artists, most of whom are members of the Boerne Area Artists Association. As an artist-owned gallery, it is able to bring new works fresh from the studio straight to the public, at prices that avoid a standard gallery commission. In addition, at least one of the Gallery artists is always present to answer any questions about the works on display.
The Gallery is located at 115 W. Highland Drive, just around the corner from Broadway Bank. This location builds upon a cluster of art galleries gradually forming in the south central part of Boerne. The Jay Hester Studio/Gallery, the Manor House, the Highland House Studios & Gallery, and the Carriage House Gallery of Artists are all located within walking distance of each other.
The Carriage House Gallery occupies the second half of an historic home. The other half is occupied by Polonyx Graphic Design and Ground Control Horseshoes, which is owned by artist member Kristy Watson and her husband, Todd. An old, red, livery stable behind the house provided the impetus for the Carriage House name. The Gallery can be recognized by the Meadowbrook Driving Cart, which is on the front porch when not being driven about town by Kristy.
Variety and originality are hallmarks of the Gallery. Kristy brings her horse-related business to bear by painting subjects familiar to the Texan in all of us: horses, cattle and south Texas farmscapes. Her works are in acrylic, and occasionally oil, paints. Linda Chalberg specializes in expressive watercolors rendered in a gentle, yet colorful, style all her own. Her primary subjects are landscapes and towns encountered locally and in travels abroad, florals, and still lifes. Kevin Overbay produces pastel paintings of wildlife which virtually sparkle upon close examination. His subjects include realistically-rendered elk, antelope, wolves and deer. Becky Rogers paints in oils and watercolor with equal masterful ease. Her works range from exquisite florals and still lifes to fields of beautiful south Texas bluebonnets. James Hunter produces large, hyper-realistic, paintings of deserts, abandoned buildings, and other subjects encountered in the American Southwest. The works, in acrylic or oil, have a sense of space that must be seen to be appreciated. The rather eclectic Charles Schubert collection includes his eerie, almost holographic, "ghost" relief sculptures. Doug Roper has added a strong touch of bronze to the Gallery, in bold sculptures of wildlife, birds, and native Americans.
